Why learn German?

Have we been worrying quite unnecessarily about the decline of language teaching in schools? Yes, says Simon Jenkins a few days ago in the Guardian. There is little point in learning languages at school. That is a recipe for a) feeding the league tables, b) forgetting the damn things anyway, and c) unnecessary in a world where the English language is more or less universal anyway (and computerised translation is coming on apace — I wonder if he has tried Google translate?).
